VALENTINE'S DAY FEB 14 2008 - CAMDEN MARKETS LONDON - The good news is that most of the Camden town markets will be open this weekend and Camden Council is encouraging visitors to come and support the markets.

Of the six markets, only the Canal Market, the worst damaged, will remain closed. Camden Lock, Camden Stables, Inverness Street, Camden Buck Street and the Main Streets markets will be open for business as usual.

Most of Camden High Street and Chalk Farm Road is open for pedestrian traffic. The London Underground is running with access to Chalk Farm Station through Camden Town Tube Station.

In details released by Camden Council, the fire "badly damaged about six shops and the flats above them in Chalk Farm Road. Around 90 market stalls have been damaged with 35 suffering extensive damage behind the shops and the Hawley Arms pub."

The badly damaged Hawley Arms, popular with locals and celebrities like Amy Winehouse and Kate Moss, will not be demolished and is being propped up from outside while the inside is worked on. Plans to rebuild and reopen the pub are already underway.

SUNDAY FEB 10 2008 - CAMDEN MARKETS,LONDON If you were heading to the Camden Markets today, or to a pub or nightclub in the area tonight, it's time to consider a change of plans.

Police have advised visitors to avoid the Camden Markets area, known not only for its markets but also for its pubs and clubs, as firefighters continue to hose down the market buildings, scene of a huge fire last night.

At least 20 fire engines and 100 firefighters were involved in the three and a half hour fight to bring the blaze under control. Damage to the popular and and historic market area is now being assessed. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported and no one is reported missing in the fire.

A Scotland Yard spokesman told the BBC that Chalk Farm Road and some of Camden High Street - the main streets in the market area - as well as surrounding one-way streets, are likely to be closed for three or four days while engineers assess structural damage. The cause of the fire is also being investigated. On a normal Sunday, as many as 150,000 might visit the six markets concentrated beside Regents Canal and railroad tracks in Northwest London.
