Guide Review - Scotland Restaurant Review - Fine Fish and Seafood at Bass Rock Bistro

Bass Rock Bistro – Top Quality Ingredients Served With Simplicity and Style

There’s a surprising amount to do in the little East Lothian seaside town of North Berwick, some 20 miles east of Edinburgh. Its award-winning Scottish Seabird Centre is one of Scotland's five star wildlife attractions and the town is also popular with dinghy sailors and artists.

We had a tip-off that the Bass Rock Bistro – in well-named Quality Street – was the place to eat. This former ice-cream parlour prides itself on local produce – like Shetland salmon, Border lamb and wonderful rope-grown mussels served in four different ways.

When making a reservation, we pre-ordered lobster for one of the party and it was there to greet us before re-appearing as the finest lobster thermidore we’d ever tasted. There’s a low priced lunch menu, but with food of this quality it’s worth making a hole in the budget and setting aside some serious eating time. If you still have room, the panna cotta of the day makes a delicious end to the meal.

Then button up your jacket and enjoy a brisk walk along the shore to gaze across at Bass Rock itself. This huge plug of rock, more than 300 feet high, is home to around 10% of the world population of North Atlantic gannets, many of which return each year to the same nest site.
