Ullinish Country Lodge, a 5-star, luxury restaurant with rooms on the Isle of Skye, has been hosting visitors for 300 years. Samuel Johnson, stayed there with James Boswell in their famously recorded visit to the Hebrides - in fact, you can stay in Johnson's room.

The Right Price for a Kentish Country Break

Thinking about a walking or cycling vacation in the Kent countryside? We like the look of Southernwood House, a 4-star, walker and cyclist friendly B&B in the medieval village of Hever. It's close to Hever Castle - childhood home of Anne Boleyn, Penshurst Place, Chiddingston and Chartwell plus a host of other National Trust properties in the area (watch for Ightham Moat House, coming soon!). B&B for 2 with ensuite bathroom, tea and coffee making facilities, costs £60-70 per room per night. It was a Georgian rectory and looks very atmospheric (wonder if there's a ghost). To book, telephone the owner on +44 (0)1342 850880, or email info@southernwoodhouse.org.uk.

Delicious at Any Price

I'm already a fan of Holbeck Ghyll, a wonderful country house hotel on Lake Windemere in the Lake District. So I was not at all surprised that its Michelin-starred restaurant has received the UK's Wine List of the Year 2009 Award from the respected Good Food Guide. The hotel offers 280 wines, including French regional wines and New World wines.

To celebrate the honor, the hotel has laid on a special deal until the end of October. Stay Sunday nights in a lake view room (gorgeous!), have a spectacular dinner in the hotel's restaurant, accompanied by half a bottle of champagne and finished off with excellent cheeses and port, plus a scrumptious breakfast Monday morning. The total cost is £350 for two sharing a double room - that's £120 off the normal price. Book this deal through the Pride of Britain Hotels Website or by telephoning 0800-089 3929.

Imperial Comfort When You Visit An Emperor

The Eton Collection, a small group of European luxury hotels, is offering an excellent London package at two of its hotels, timed to coordinate with the British Museum's spectacular Hadrian: Empire and Conflict exhibition.

Stay during the exhibition at either the five-star Threadneedles (+44 (0)20 7657 8080), in the City of London, or The Academy(+44 (0)20 7631 4115), five Georgian homes right next to the British Museum, for very competitive bed and breakfast room rates. Between July 24 and October 26, the package - at £219 per room for the Academy and £250 per room for Threadneedles - includes two tickets for the exhibition - worth £12 each - and the exhibition book, by curator Thorsten Opper, worth £25. The Great British Heritage Pass - Save a Bundle on Admission to Nearly Everything!

The Great British Heritage Pass, offered by VisitBritain to visitors from outside the United Kingdom, is one of the best deal's I've seen in a long time. For one flat fee -covering 4, 7, 15 or 30 days - pass holders get full admission to almost 600 different sites; family passes, for two adults and three kids under 16 are available too. Good value? Well VisitBritain compiled the cost of single adult tickets to the top 15 UK sites. The price came to £141.60. The cost of a Great British Heritage Pass for 15 days was £52 - that's a savings of £89. Even if you spread those 15 site visits over a month long pass (£70), you'd still save £71.60. That sounds like a great deal to me.
